Learning about Spanish literature and culture is the essential complement to your Spanish language studies. Yet even if you’re just beginning with your Spanish language studies, there is still the opportunity to discover the renowned classic works and acclaimed modern pieces of Spanish literature in their numerous translations.
Of course literary purists will argue that nothing surpasses the expression of reading a literary masterpiece in its native language, but sometimes this just isn’t possible – or isn’t possible for the time being! As you work harder on your Spanish, your reading level will also improve, but it’s no good trying to struggle through, say, Don Quixote from the very outset.
It’s lucky that this classic of Western literature and the magnum opus of great Spanish novelist, poet and playwright Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) has appeared in over 700 editions and is available in all major world languages. In everything from Lithuanian to English translations, or even from a Hindi translation to a Norwegian translation, you’ll be able to get your hands on this renowned work, considered by many as the first modern
novel and regarded as one of the most significant works of world literature.
For other known and also up-and-coming Spanish language authors, it’s much easier to get your hands on an English, German or Italian translation, and French translations of Spanish works are also popular given the strength of the French literary translation industry. If you’re looking to read the works of Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz and Isabel Allende in your own language, there are many translations available for anyone interesting in getting the ideal introduction to, and discovering more about Spanish language literature.
