Your Spanish Lesson 3

Learn Spanish Online with these basic Spanish lessons

In this third Spanish lesson we are going to go over the different short questions that you can use multiple times in every-day life. Questions like Why? Where? When? can come in very handy, specially at the beginning, when your vocabulary is still limited. Additionally we will add a mini lesson on "there is" - the use of the verb 'hay' in the Spanish language.

Spanish lesson in short questions:

¿Dónde? (where) ¿Dónde está el enfermo? / Where is the patient?
¿Qué? (what) ¿Qué día es hoy?  / What day is today?
¿Quién? (who) ¿Quién es su médico?  / Who is your doctor?
¿Por qué? (why) ¿Por qué está usted aquí?  / Why are you here?
¿Cuándo? (when) ¿Cuándo visitas a un médico?  / When do you visit a doctor?
¿Cómo? (how) ¿Cómo llegó al hospital?  / How did you get to the hospital?
¿Cuánto? (how) ¿Cuántos años tiene?  / How old are you?

The use of the word 'hay':

"Hay" means "There is" or "There are" in English!

Hay un buen hospital en esta ciudad. / There is a good hospital in this city.

You could also use the same sentence as a question, just changing the tonality of the way you say it:

¿Hay un buen hospital en esta ciudad? / Is there is a good hospital  in this city?.

¿Cuántas casas hay? / How many houses are there?
Hay cinco casas. / There are five houses.
¿Hay casas rojas?  /  Are there red houses?
Sí, si hay casas rojas.  /  Yes, there are red houses.
No, no hay casas rojas.   /   No, there are no red houses.
