Almodóvar is one of my favourite
directors and he is probably the most well known Spanish director
outside of Spain.
As a gift idea it is something
interesting and different. His films are entertaining as well as
engaging. There is no shying away from the more difficult aspects of
life, nor the bare realities. The films I particularly want to recommend
are Todo Sobre Mi Madre and Hable Con Ella. Potentially two of his most
successful films, but also two films that are hard to dislike. The first
is a typical Almodóvar film exploring many aspects of life and looking
into the life of women and those marginalised by society. The latter
deals with some complex ethical considerations that arise from a
comatose young girl. Both are fascinating films ideal for people who
want to get more from a film then just mere entertainment for two hours.
One other film worth mentioning briefly here is Mujeres al Borde de un
Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). This was
an international bestseller and is a great film. Almodóvar’s films are
wide ranging, and there are box sets available. These would make ideal
presents for someone who you know is interested in Spanish cinema.
