Carlos Saura has made many films
throughout the years and those films have varied greatly in theme. Of
recent years he has concentrated on dance related films of which there
are many and all are very good. To mention a few there are: Bodas de
Sangre, Flamenco, Carmen, Tango, Salomé. These would all contribute to
anyone’s dvd library, and I especially like Tango and Carmen. The way
that he fuses his ideas on film, dance and perceived reality into one is
incredible and makes these films wonderful to watch and thought
provoking.
One other film I will mention by Carlos Saura is Cría Cuervos. The title
means Raise Ravens, and refers to the Spanish proverb: Cría cuervos y te
sacarán los ojos (raise ravens and they’ll pluck your eyes out). This is
a chilling film at times, but also an intriguing one. The young girl who
is the protagonist introduces us to an idea of childhood fun, which is
strictly prohibited by her mother. The peculiar family situation makes
it worse and this girls attempt to deal with the situation makes an
interesting film. This is certainly a classic of Spanish cinema and
would be appreciated by a Spanish cinema enthusiast.
Saura’s films are again available in box sets. See the full review of
Carmen
Lorca, Muerte de un Poeta:
This film is a fascinating depiction of Lorca’s final days. Admittedly
this may not seem a cheery idea for a Christmas gift, but it is a great
film nonetheless. We associate so closely with the character of Lorca in
this film and feel the full weight of the tyranny that saw him so
innocently murdered. This is an interesting film for many reasons: it
could appeal to anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War, or anyone
who appreciated the work of Lorca, but also it is good just to watch to
see how a man who was so afraid of death faced the uncertainty of his
own end.
